Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Electric vehicles (EVs) have continued to gain popularity in recent years as one of the leading environmentally friendly technologies. Advanced technologies, governments' zero emission targets and economical fuel consumption make electric vehicles an attractive option for both individual users and batteries. However, one of the most important factors facilitating the distribution of electric energy is seen as the presence of widespread and accessible charging stations. In a large metropolis like Istanbul, the number of electric vehicle charging stations is increasing.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Istanbul

Istanbul is among the largest cities in Turkey that offers electric vehicle users a long charging life. Electric vehicle charging stations can be found at many points, from parking lots in shopping malls to gas stations. These charging stations are divided into 3 categories according to the method of use and 2 categories according to the current power of the charging unit.

Electric vehicle charging stations according to charging method:

-Battery change charging (Quick Drop)
-Wireless charging (Wireless)
-Wired charging (On-Board/Off-Board)

Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are divided into two types according to current power, as we have just mentioned: AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current).

What is AC (Alternating Current) Charging? AC Charging Stations

AC (Alternating Current) charging stations, also known as normal charging stations, are stations that generally provide power between 7-22 kW and can charge vehicle batteries in a few hours. AC charging stations transmit electrical energy provided by the grid directly to the vehicles. However, in order for this electricity to be stored in the battery, it must be converted to DC (Direct Current) format. This conversion in AC charging stations is not carried out in the station itself, but by a converter in the vehicle equipment. For this reason, AC charging stations are widely used due to their lower cost. AC charging stations are preferred in long-term parking situations.

What is DC (Direct Current) Charging? DC Charging Stations

DC (Direct Current) charging stations provide high power, allowing you to charge the batteries of electric vehicles much faster. In these stations, the power converter is located in the station hardware, so AC (Alternating Current) is converted to DC inside the station and transmitted directly to the vehicle's battery. This bypasses the converter stage in the vehicle and provides energy transfer at a higher speed. DC charging stations, which usually provide 50 kW and above, can charge your vehicle up to 80% in just 30-60 minutes. These fast charging stations, especially located in city centers and busy areas, allow users to save time and charge their vehicles in a short time.

Are Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Paid? How Are Payments Made?
One of the questions that comes to mind for people who have not started using electric vehicles (EVs) is the cost of charging an electric vehicle. The payment method at electric vehicle charging stations varies depending on the institution operating the station. However, we can easily say that these payment transactions are extremely easy.

Online payments can be made via mobile applications at most electric vehicle charging stations. Payments with bank or credit cards are also accepted. Some parking lots or venues also have free charging stations for customers. Therefore, there is more than one solution for electric vehicle users.
